Brown University welcomes 3,289 new students to campus this Fall

Brown University has welcomed its 3,289 new students to campus, out of which, 1,725 new undergraduate students began their studies for the Class of 2028. Other students include a cohort of medical students, master's, doctoral, and undergraduate transfer students.

The university's admission team is planning to continue with the previous measures and apply more race-neutral strategies to have students from diverse backgrounds and those who are academically outstanding too.

"The Office of College Admission continually evaluates the success of its outreach efforts to learn which are the most effective, and it will explore ways to build on initiatives that helped promote diversity among applicants and incoming students. A continued focus on partnerships with college pathways programs is being supported by the addition of new staff positions at the University. This includes programs at Brown, including the new Brown Collegiate Scholars Program, as well as efforts with community-based organizations," said Logan Powell, associate provost for enrollment and dean of undergraduate admission.

Warren Alpert Medical School greets 144 medical students in Class of 2028

The 144 first-year medical students attended the annual white coat ceremony to begin their journey of becoming medical professionals in the coming time. In this event as per tradition, the new students were coated with White Coats by the dean.

Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences Dr. Mukesh K. Jain addressed the event and said, “We choose this as our calling not because it is easy, but because it is hard, and it is important."

Idowu Olugbade, a member of the M.D. Class of 2025 also talked to the new students and said, “Patients do not come with instruction manuals or neatly packaged symptoms that fit textbook descriptions. They come with complexities and stories that are sometimes only half-told. You will find yourself piecing together fragments, and there will be times when you must act without a complete picture."

One of the faculty who received his M.D. from the Warren Alpert Medical School in 2012, Dr Benjamin Brown, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynaecology also addressed the students and said, “Do not let your white coat separate you from your patients. Your white coat is not a symbol of otherness. It is not a symbol of superiority. It is a symbol of humanity and of humility. It is a symbol of your commitment to go with your patients and to allow yourself to be changed by them.”

New students were also excited to get the Coats and were expressing gratitude for the event. First-year medical student Victor Damptey said, “I’ve always been interested in helping people, whether that’s through technology, engineering or face-to-face interactions. Being here at Brown has enabled me to put all those skills together to be able to help my community.”

“It’s so exciting to be here with all my classmates and all our families and friends, just to celebrate such an exciting journey to come,” said another new medical student, Julia Contini.
