Eight University of New South Wales researchers named ARC Future Fellows for 2024

Study in Australia: The academics of UNSW Sydney from a range of disciplines have received Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowships for 2024. Under this fellowship, eight researchers of the university will get over $8.7 million in funding for projects ranging from design problems in microeconomic theory to investigating plant genetics.

Professor Bronwyn Fox, the UNSW Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research & Enterprise congratulated the eight University’s 2024 Future Fellows and said, “We are immensely proud of our mid-career researchers from science, engineering, law, business and the arts who have received Fellowships. From projects predicting how the environment affects chemical reactions, to explaining how the military rules through constitutions in authoritarian regimes – it’s wonderful to see such a broad range of issues being investigated among the eight UNSW projects."

Fellowship Winners

The following are the fellowship winners:

  • UNSW Law & Justice's Professor Melissa Crouch has received $1,205,000 to study the legal challenges of the military in Asia and other regions.
  • UNSW Science Department's Dr Selene Fernandez Valverde has received $983,000 to study epigenetics and plant genetics. The study will understand the RNA binding proteins and structures to understand how they change and work together.
  • UNSW Science Department's Associate Professor Junming Ho has received $988,000 to research about how the environment affects chemical reactions. The professor will use machine learning and advanced computational chemistry for this study.
  • UNSW Business School's Professor Anton Kolotilin has received $1,195,600 to study about design problems in microeconomic theory including the design of decision-making processes, regulatory policies, and disclosure rules.
  • UNSW Engineering's Dr Georgios Konstantinou has received $1,066,000 to study low-inertia electricity grids which depend on the power electronics converters.
  • UNSW Engineering's Dr Hoang Phuong Phan has received $1,046,500 for a project that aims to develop 3D MicroelectroMechanical Systems which is transparent and flexible.
  • UNSW Science's Professor Sophie Primig has received $1,205,600 to study built-in 3D microstructural gradients into high-performance alloys.
  • Dr Rachael Swain, from Arts, Design & Architecture has got a fellowship of $1,066,800 to study visual dramaturgies in intercultural performances.
