Germany gains popularity among Indian students as study abroad destination
The official data of Germany has revealed that the country is becoming increasingly popular among Indian students for study abroad destinations.
While study abroad aspirants are giving second thought to countries like Australia, the UK and Canada due to their latest changes in immigration policies, Germany on the other hand gaining popularity as the study abroad destination for Indian students.
The data has revealed that Indian students are the biggest source of international students for Germany for the second year in a row. In fact, the number of Indian students has doubled in Germany in the last five years.
As per the Federal Statistical Office of Germany's latest figures, the number of Indian students studying in Germany has hiked by 15.1% in the last year. A total of 49483 Indian students studied in Germany during the 2023-2024 Winter Semester.
Most Indian students enrol for Engineering programs. Around 60% of the Indian student population in Germany is enrolled in Engineering programs, 21% are in social studies, management and law, 13% are in natural sciences and mathematics, and 5% are in other subjects, as reported by Financial Express.
Study in Germany: Details
The country allows international students to work also while they are pursuing their courses. They can work every year for up to 140 full days or 280 half days without getting previous approval from the Federal Employment Agency. Also, they can work for any number of hours during the semester breaks, there are no restrictions on the number of hours during this period.
This gain in popularity is despite the fact that the country has increased the amount needed as proof of income. It increased from 934 euros per month to 992 euros per month or from 11,208 euros per year to 11,904 euros. Also, the students need to pay for the books, housing and living expenses by themselves.
It is cost-effective education at the public universities of Germany as these institutes normally waive fees for both international and domestic students. The students need to pay a nominal fee to cover transportation, student services and administrative costs.
