Germany's economic growth potential to fall further if the country fails to resolve the problem of critical labour shortage soon. It is now targeting Indian students to fill workplace vacancies.
While Germany is facing a critical labour shortage and an ageing population, German universities have a record number of Indian students. Indians comprise the largest group of international students in Germany.
As per the TOI report, Germany is planning to resolve the labour shortage problem by engaging the Indian student population in the country to the workforce.
The projection says that the country will have a deficit of seven million skilled workers by 2035. Currently, there are 700,000 vacancies unfilled, the economic growth of the country has dropped to 0.7% and is set to decline further to 0.5% if the country fails to resolve this problem, said German Economy Minister Robert Habeck.
He also stressed the significance of migration in bringing this widening gap.
Work with studies
Earlier, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) president, Dr Joybrato Mukherjee had said that it is important to make the German labour market attractive for students from India to address the increasing gap in skilled workers in the German labour market.
“For Indian students, who have got German degrees many of which are taught in English; the way to getting employment in Germany and other Schengen area countries is now more attractive. We believe in the concept of brain circulation rather than brain drain and we think that international students who are well qualified can follow a very successful professional career path in Germany,” he said earlier, as reported by the Economic Times.
The country's recent Skilled Immigration Act would also allow international students to work 20 hours per week along with studies which is double the previous limit.
