Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that to strengthen the bridge between the Indian diaspora in the US and India, the University of Houston is to have a Thiruvalluvar Chair of Tamil studies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said to further improve the living bridge between India and its diaspora in the United States, India is all set to open the Thiruvalluvar Chair of Tamil Studies at the University of Houston.

PM Modi said he hopes that the Indian diaspora will play a significant role in fostering closer ties between the two countries through its strong convening strength.

Los Angeles welcomes PM Modi's decision

“The Modi government listens and responds to the needs of Indian Americans and of American business and political leaders. I am grateful to Prime Minister Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Sandhu for the decision to open a consulate in Los Angeles,” Gunjan Bagla, CEO of Amritt Inc, a Los Angeles-based consulting firm, as reported by News 18.

“We obtained over 3,600 signatures from Southern California residents. Dozens of American and Indian American organisations wrote letters to the Prime Minister’s Office,” he added.

India to open new consulates in Boston, LA

To meet the demands of the ever-expanding Indian American community in Boston and Los Angeles, PM Modi on Sunday announced India's plan to open two new consulates in these two big American cities.

While Los Angeles is known to be home to Hollywood and Eric Garcetti, the current US Ambassador to India is the city’s former mayor and the city is hosting the next summer Olympics, Boston is considered the capital city for pharma and education.








While addressing Indian Americans in New York’s Nassau Veterans Coliseum, he said, “Friends last year, I had announced that our government had plans to open a new consulate in Seattle. It is now operational. I had asked for suggestions from you for two more consulates. I am happy to announce that after reviewing your suggestions, India has decided to open two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles."







Currently, India has six consulates in the US including in Seattle, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, and New York, New York City has a Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, and the Embassy is in Washington DC.
