India to be largest source of International students for US by 2034
An international research firm has predicted that the number of international students in the US is going to increase from 1.3 million to 2.8 million by 2034, and Indian students are going to be the most important source of international students for the US.
The US remains the top choice for Indian students when it comes to studying abroad. It is being reflected in a study by an international research firm.
A new analysis from HolonIQ stated that the number of international students in the United States is expected to increase from around 1.3 million to 2.8 million by 2034.
"India is expected to deliver the single largest growth in absolute student numbers through to 2030, adding around 200K students over the next 6 years at a compound average growth rate of 7.3%. India delivered a 35% year-on-year increase from 2022 to 2023 demonstrating very strong demand that will likely moderate back to a strong and sustainable high single-digit growth rate as the market absorbs such a large and sudden increase," reads Holon IQ report.
Indian students to overtake Chinese students in US
Indian students in the US will overtake Chinese students by more than 100K by 2030 and represent nearly 500K international students alone. Other largest sources of international students in the US will be Vietnam, Nigeria and Bangladesh whereas South Korea, Japan and Saudi Arabia will have a slow decline by 2030.
The Global Student Flows Initiative's 2024 US Outlook in partnership with Shorelight and in support of the US for Success Coalition, aims to inform the stakeholders including universities, investors, firms, and governments in setting strategy, policy and allocating investment capital and resources to support the growth of international education.
Study in US: More Details
In an earlier report, Holon IQ said that the US has always been a leading destination for international education.
"India is the clear standout source country in the project, expected to double from around 200,000 students today to 400,000 in 2030. While much remains to be done to unlock this potential, notably on operational issues such as visa processing, India would effectively replace China as the number one source country and represent around 1 in 3 students in 2030," said the earlier report.
The majority of Indian students are joining graduate programs in science, math, and engineering courses in the US. In India, American universities can be seen in various university fairs aimed to attract Indian students to the US institutes. International students pay higher fees abroad hence, it is a major source of income for the universities.
