Los Rios Community College District offers study abroad program

The deadline to sign up for the upcoming semester in London is June 5, with the semester taking place from Sept. 5 to Dec. 6.

Los Rios Community College District is offering a study abroad program. Each fall semester, the study abroad program of Los Rios Community College District visits either London, United Kingdom or Barcelona, Spain, with the spring semesters taking place in Florence, Italy.

“Whatever makes you an interesting person, and there is plenty that does, being a study abroad student will make you even more interesting and even more awesome,” said Gregory Beyrer, the Los Rios faculty representative in London for the 2024 fall semester, as reported by The American River Current.

“The intent is to give students the opportunity to spend some time in another country. The classes are the same classes in terms of what is on the transcript and they are UC and CSU transferable," added Beyrer.

The program is designed with the focus of teaching students about what life is really like in these countries.

About Los Rios Study Abroad Program

It helps students explore the world while earning academic credit and developing professional and personal skills. The classes are taught in English. Support staff are provided in each country for counselling, illness and any questions or issues that arise.

The following are the eligibility requirements:

• 18 years of age
• 12 units of college completed (units do not have to be from Los Rios Colleges, but credit from AP scores and similar don't qualify)
• 2.25-2.50 grade point average (GPA); varies by program
• Be in good academic standing

The programs are administered in partnership with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). Financial aid, scholarships, and other funding opportunities are available to help with program expenses. The financial aid opportunities include AIFS Study Abroad Scholarships and Grants which offer $500 Ambassador scholarships and $1,000 Opportunity scholarships.

To apply for a study abroad program, the candidates must complete an application for Federal Student Aid and make an appointment with the advisor.
