Study In Australia: University Of Melbourne Strengthens Ties With Pacific
The agreement between the University of Melbourne and Solomon Islands National University (SINU) established the foundation for partnership in personal development, teaching, and research.
The University of Melbourne has joined forces with the Solomon Islands National University (SINU). During the visit of the University of Melbourne delegation to the Pacific to boost and expand its engagement and collaborations with the key educational institutes in the region, both institutes inked a Memorandum of Understanding.
The delegation was led by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global, Culture and Engagement), Professor Michael Wesley, the University of Melbourne. The team visited Samoa, Fiji and in the Solomon Islands, it joined the Australian High Commission in Honiara.
The collaboration between the two institutes set the foundation for further collaboration in professional development, teaching and research.
Professor Wesley said, "Our sustained engagement in the Pacific affirms our commitment to expanding regional educational opportunities and addressing global challenges through meaningful partnerships like the one we have with Solomon Islands National University.”
SINU Vice-Chancellor Dr Transform Aqorau said, “This marks a significant milestone for SINU as we continue to position ourselves as a hub for academic excellence in the Pacific. The exchange of knowledge, research collaboration and capacity-building initiatives established through this MoU will contribute immensely to the development of our university and the broader Solomon Islands community. We look forward to the opportunities that this engagement will bring for our students, faculty, and the region as a whole.”

Both universities co-hosted the 3rd Asia and the Pacific Outlook Series. It was coordinated by the SINU-Australia Seminar and Asialink in Honiara. Professor Wesley and Dr Aqorau jointly hosted the seminar Solomon Islands and Australia in the Evolving Global Higher Education Landscape.
The seminar witnessed high-level dialogue and there were five collaborative workshops which followed the seminar. These workshops focused on key research areas including peacebuilding initiatives, a new Centre for Linguistics, and developing research capacity in environmental studies.
