Monash VC Joins ASEAN-Australia Centre Board To Foster Ties To Southeast Asia

Monash University in Australia has a deep presence across the region with partnership campuses in India at Monash-IITB Research Academy and in China at Monash Suzhou and wholly-owned campuses in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Monash VC Joins ASEAN-Australia Centre Board To Foster Ties To Southeast Asia

Study in Australia: Senator Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs has appointed the Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering to serve on the inaugural board of the ASEAN-Australia Centre.

While serving on the board, the Vice-Chancellor will contribute to fostering closer ties between Southeast Asia and Australia.

Professor Pickering commented, “The Monash global network of campuses and locations across the region affords us an unprecedented reach for our research and education to impact and change lives and communities at scale.”

“As a globally connected institution, Monash University is actively contributing to Australia's regional and global interests across education and research, facilitating collaboration, innovation, and cross-cultural understanding and exchange,” added Professor Pickering.

“We are a trusted and influential partner, anchored in our communities, contributing to peace and prosperity and fostering deep understanding and connectedness. It is an honour to be able to continue and enhance this work through the ASEAN-Australia Centre,” she said.








About ASEAN-Australia Centre

The formation of the centre was announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in  March at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in Melbourne and it started its operations in July. This centre also replaced the former Australia-ASEAN Council.







Monash University Debuts As Winner At 2024 Green Gown Awards

The university has been named as a dual winner at the 2024 Green Gown Awards. Monash University student Anthony Brady was named the 2024 Student Champion and for its Global Immersion Guarantee (GIG) program, the university won in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion category. The university was also named as finalist in four more categories including Next Generation Learning and Skills and Sustainability Leadership.

Deputy Vice-Chanellor (Student Experience) and Senior Vice-President, Professor Sarah McDonald commented, “These awards affirm Monash University’s commitment to sustainability and transformative impact as a leader in Australia and the Indo-Pacific region. They reflect our dedication to providing students with rich educational experiences that foster a global, climate-conscious and innovative mindset, preparing them to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges."
