NSF Grant To Washington State University Researchers To Support Cybersecurity Training
This is one of the few awards in the Pacific Northwest. The grant is a multi-year NSF award for cybersecurity workforce training and is the first large-scale funding.
Study in US: The researchers at Washington State University have received a $3.5 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to support education programs for students in cybersecurity and also a related scholarship.
Partha Pande, interim dean of Voiland College and Engineering and Architecture commented, “This prestigious award will significantly impact training for the next generation of the cybersecurity workforce. It will help to train Washington students and bolster the cybersecurity workforce within the state and nation.”
The program name is CyberCorps Scholarship for Service which aims to educate and train cybersecurity professionals and prepare them to be future ready for local, state and federal government positions.
Assefaw Gebremedhin, associate professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science who is leading the project commented, “With increasing complexity and connectivity in modern computing environments, the risk and cost of cyber-attacks on our national assets and critical infrastructure continue to rise. There is an urgent demand for universities to cultivate highly skilled cybersecurity professionals who can fill the workforce gap, particularly within the government sector.”

CyberCorps Scholarship for Service is based on the universities new bachelor's degree in cybersecurity and WSU’s VICEROY Institute for Cybersecurity Education and Research (CySER). It trains the DOD and ROTC skilled civilian workers in cyber basics, defence, and operations and will offer bachelor's degrees and specialised certificates.
Ananth Kalyanaraman, interim director of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science commented, “We are excited to start this new program at WSU. The award will strengthen our ongoing growth in cybersecurity programs and initiatives, attract more students and faculty, and create new opportunities for our graduates to step into high-paying and satisfying careers.”
WSU Study Shows Link Of People's Activity With Place
A study by WSU shows that there is a link between the built environment and how much people walk.
"Walkable neighborhoods include stores, parks and restaurants as well as access to public transportation. On the other side, more suburban or rural areas tend to be less walkable as they require driving to access things like grocery stores or other amenities," reads the study.
