NYU Ranks Number 1 In New York State On National Science Foundation Research Ranking
The National Science Foundation conducts the survey on Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) annually to evaluate the US colleges and universities' research spending which is a key measure for the research performance of any university or institute. NYU has for the first time topped this annual survey.
National Science Foundation’s annual Higher Education Research and Development survey has ranked New York University at number one for the first time.
“NYU's meteoric rise in this ranking is a testament to our growing research enterprise—the cutting-edge work of our scholars across disciplines, the increasing investment from funders to support this impactful research, and the university’s dedicated and strategic efforts to drive innovation and breakthroughs,” said Stacie Grossman Bloom, NYU’s chief research officer, vice chancellor, and vice provost for research and innovation.
NYU Performance In National Science Foundation Research Ranking: Details
It reached the top position due to the expansion of its research program. It significantly increased its research spending in a decade, with 1.46 billion in research spending for fiscal year 2023. For the third year in a row, the university has increased its research spending by $1 billion.
The university ranked number five among private universities nationally.
This year's survey used data from July 2022 to June 2023 and found robust growth in the university’s research enterprise, up by 14.2% as compared to the previous year. The funding for engineering and computer science research has increased by over 10%, and for research in life sciences and physical sciences, it increased by 15%.
Projects That Helped NYU To Be At Number 1
Notable projects that contributed to its number one position are the following:
- Office of Naval Research granted NYU physicists $7.5 million to improve quantum computing—research which can later contribute to the advancement of superconductors and semiconductors.
- The US Department of State awarded $5.5 million to the NYU Marron Institute researchers for a project that aims to reduce human trafficking in India.
- NYU Steinhardt received $5.1 million from the NYC Department of Education to continue its decades-long investment in the education of students with autism.
- National Institutes of Health awarded $3.9 million to researchers at NYU College of Dentistry to study the molecular mechanisms underlying oral cancer pain and opioid tolerance.
