Royal Astronomical Society has awarded the University of Warwick Astrophysicist Dimitri Veras, the prestigious George Darwin Lectureship.

While commenting on this, Dr Veras said, “I am truly honoured to be recognised by the Society in this way, and I thank my colleagues who have also helped to drive forward this exciting field of research.”

The George Darwin Lecture is named after Sir George Darwin, son of Charles Darwin and an esteemed astronomer himself. This Lecture is an annual event where a distinguished speaker speaks on a relevant topic in astronomy.

Royal Astronomical Society has cited, “Dr Dimitri Veras is an outstanding theoretical astrophysicist, and a leader in the field of post-main-sequence planetary system science”.

The citation added, “His work has enabled observations to be used to learn about the nature, composition and ultimate fate of planetary systems. He is an engaging science communicator and an inspirational speaker to audiences of all kinds, and a superb ambassador for exoplanet science and stellar astrophysics.”

The Royal Astronomical Society President, and former Gold Medal winner, Professor Mike Lockwood, commented, “Awards are a very important part of the Society’s function. All our award winners are an inspiration, and it is clear to me that the depth of talent means that the future of our sciences is incredibly bright.”
