University Of Michigan To End Two-Decade Collaboration With Shanghai Jiao Tong University
After discussing with internal stakeholders of the University of Michigan and US congressional leadership, President Santa J. Ono confirmed the decision to end the university's partnership with China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
University Of Michigan has announced to end of its longstanding partnership with China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University. President Santa J. Ono said this after discussing the matter with internal stakeholders and US congressional leadership.
The university decided to end its two-decade partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University after the House Select Committee report on the strategic competition between the Chinese Communist Party and the US. The report raised national security concerns for the US due to this partnership. Committee chair U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Michigan had also written to the university and expressed the concerns.
“International academic partnerships have deeply enriched our academic offerings and strengthened the global education of our students, and we will continue to pursue partnerships around the world as part of our academic mission. As we do so, we must also prioritize our commitment to national security,” Ono said.
University Of Michigan Continues To Support International Students, Says President
The president also emphasized the significance of international education and the contribution of international faculty, students and staff on the University Of Michigan campus.
“International experiences are vital for our students in this interconnected world. We remain committed to supporting U-M’s international students and will continue to foster international partnerships that advance knowledge and cross-cultural understanding and ensure our campus remains a vibrant community where scholars from around the world can thrive,” he said.
U-M, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Have Joint Institute
Under the partnership, both the institutes had a joint institute which had University Of Michigan students from both the US and China. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology has accredited the engineering degree programs being offered at the joint institute. All courses at this institute were being offered in the English language.
It was a significant partnership for the University Of Michigan which offered various dual-degree programs, academic exchanges, study-abroad opportunities and scholarships to the students in the last two decades. The joint institute offered international learning experiences to over 1,000 undergraduate students from the University Of Michigan and other institutes.
