Study Abroad: Finland Science Minister Visits Imperial To Welcome Growing UK-Finland Research

Study Abroad: Finland Science Minister Visits Imperial To Welcome Growing UK-Finland Research

Finland's Minister of Science and Culture, Sari Multala, visited the Imperial College London to highlight the increasing research partnership between Finland and the UK. During his visit, he was welcomed by Imperial's Professor Arttu Rajantie from the Department of Physics and Chair of the Finnish Science Society and Provost Professor Ian Walmsley CBE.

To learn more about these collaborations, he visited the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein and interacted with the students and scientists at Imperial. The collaborations between Imperial and Finland are increasing and currently, there are 32 Horizon Europe collaborations of Imperial with partners in Finland. These projects are on climate sciences and climate modelling, sustainable critical raw materials, COVID-19 response, energy storage, yeast-based solutions for sustainable aviation, and battery technology.

Imperial College London and Finland's VTT Technical Research Centre are also collaborating along with other partners on a project funded by the US National Science Foundation Global Centers programme to develop global standards for biofoundry development.

Imperial Plans Defence And Security Research In Belgium

Imperial met with the European Commission and key stakeholders across the European R&I community in Belgium to discuss the defence and security research.

During the meeting, Professor Julie McCann, Vice-Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Engineering spoke about the potential and importance of cross-European collaboration. She spoke about the positive collaborations and her research into sensor-based systems.








The conference was one day long and hosted a number of speakers from across the EU member governments, the European Commission, and industry experts. The experts talked about the future of dual-use technology.







Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General for Research and Innovation in the European Commission said, "The EU needed to carefully consider the needs of associated countries, such as the UK, to framework programmes with any future development."

"Appearing alongside representatives from Boeing International and the European Commission, the panel discussed the opportunities for collaboration across the EU, UK and US, with the significant scale required to work on research and innovation. This includes working with NATO and its DIANA programme, whose first hub was launched at Imperial in March 2023," said the official notification of the Imperial.
