Japan is the fourth-largest economy in the world by GDP. Four of its universities have positioned among the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings 2025.

Those who are looking to study abroad can explore the universities in Japan as four of its universities have ranked in the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings 2025. The country offers a great option for Indian students who are looking to study abroad.

Top universities in Japan for study abroad

  • The University of Tokyo is in the 32nd position in the QS ranking 2025. It has 15 graduate schools and 10 faculties and around 30,000 students enrolled, out of which 2,100 are international students. Japan till now had 62 prime ministers, of which 15 are from the University of Tokyo, the university alumni also become astronauts. The university offers many scholarship options for the master’s programme. There are a total of 28,027 students, of which 50% are undergraduate and 50% are postgraduate students, 4,604 are international students and the total faculty staff is 4,570.
  • Kyoto University is in the 50th position. It has produced some world-renowned researchers including 13 Nobel Prize laureates. It is one of the leading research institutes in Asia. The university always ranks high in major rankings including in the top 50 universities worldwide, in the top 10 for Asia and in the top two for Japan. The natural beauty of the campus also is noticeable which includes tranquil temple gardens and mountains. When compared with Tokyo or Osaka, the cost of living in Kyoto is more affordable. It has a total of 22,290 students, 2,912 international students and a total faculty staff is 3,918.
  • Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) is in the 84th position in the latest QS ranking. It has 17 undergraduate programs, 26 postgraduate programs and a 4,600 USD tuition fee per year. It has three campuses, two in Japan’s capital and one in Yokohama. All programs are offered in English. International Graduate Programs (IGP) and the Global Scientists and Engineers Program (GSEP) are two of the most popular degrees. There are many scholarship options which are available. There is one course in Arts and Humanities, 9 in Engineering and Technology, 6 in Natural Sciences, and 1 in Life Sciences and Medicine.
  • Osaka University is in the 86th position, there are 22,280 students in the university, 2,293 international students and 2,131 total faculty staff. It is also among the top 40 universities in the world for Chemical Engineering, Dentistry, Natural Sciences Physics and Astronomy. It is the sixth oldest university in Japan.
