Paul Bourke Award is given in Australia for Early Career Research to honour the initial part of the career of professionals who achieved excellence in one of the fields of social sciences or have achieved excellence in scholarship.

Two researchers at Monash University - Dr Michelle Liu and Dr Claire Blewitt have each won the Paul Bourke Award for Early Career Research.

The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) is all set to offer them a medallion at the organisation’s Annual Dinner and a certificate next month. The university is also invited by the ASSA to co-host two public lectures which will showcase these researchers' study during the Social Sciences Week in 2025. ASSA award is named after the late Professor Paul Bourke who served as ASSA President from 1993 to 1997 and this award has been received by Australia's leading social scientists.

Monash University's Paul Bourke Award Winners Details

Dr Blewitt was given this award for her work in co-designing the innovative Social-Emotional Engagement and Development (SEED) program. She is a Research Fellow at the Monash University School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine. Dr Liu won this award for her notable contributions to topics including word meaning and consciousness. She is the Lecturer in the School of Philosophical, Historical and Indigenous Studies. Her research is highly relevant to cross-cultural examination and public dialogue. The interdisciplinary research draws from linguistics and psychology and is grounded in philosophy.

While commenting on this, Monash University Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President, Mike Ryan, said, “The Paul Bourke awards are highly regarded by the wider research community, representing exceptional achievement by early career researchers. It's wonderful to have Monash represented by two awards this year. I congratulate Claire and Michelle for their hard work and impactful contributions to their respective fields.”








Monash Students Dazzle At Prestigious Global Competition

Monash Business School students have returned with a trio of awards from Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) in the highly competitive categories. BAP is an international honour society for top-achieving finance, accounting, professionals and information systems students. Team member Alyssa Giuliano, incoming presidents Patrick Kewin and Smriti Soni, and co-presidents Aditya Jain and Mitchell Dorling represented the chapter at the event.







“Interest in volunteering through our partnerships with Mums Supporting Families In Need (MSFIN) is at new heights, and events like our Oracle workshop series and our successful inclusive leadership series came from member demand. Aditya and I could not be prouder of the Xi Epsilon committee, especially our Competitions Director Jeremiah Galabadaarachchi, for all the hard work that went into our successful submission,” said Beta Alpha Psi Xi Epsilon president Mitchell Dorling.
