Those who are looking to pursue a doctoral program in Germany can apply for Research Grants – Doctoral Programmes offered by DAAD. The last date to submit the application is October 21, 2024.

German Federal Foreign Office funds this scholarship. It offers funding for either an individual project or for participation in a structured doctoral study programme.

For Indian students, the selection will be completed approximately in February and the funding will start in October of the next year. The candidates need to upload various documents along with the filled online application form on the DAAD portal. These documents include curriculum vitae in tabular form a maximum of 3 pages, academic description, list of publications if applicable, personal reasons for pursuing a doctoral from Germany, description of previous research, degree certificates, and letter of recommendation.

Selection Criteria

The selection committee chooses applications on the following basis - academic progress and achievements, scholarly achievements after studies, language expertise, research proposal and preparation quality, study plan and schedule feasibility and consistency, career prospects, motivation and other activities such as civic engagement, skills and study-related knowledge.

Research Grants – Doctoral Programmes in Germany: More Details

The funding is provided in the monthly payments of 1,300 euros for a maximum of four years. The duration depends on the study plan and project and it is decided by the selection committee. In the beginning, it is awarded for a maximum of one year. If one successfully completes the previous award period, they can get more extensions.








The scholarship also provides travel allowance, health and personal liability insurance coverage, accident coverage, and an annual research allowance of € 460.

In some cases, the applicant can also apply for monthly allowance for family members and rent subsidy.







Language Support

DAAD also pays online language course fees and facilitates language courses before the start of research if needed. The applicant can also choose a German language course and can get an allowance during the grant period. It also provides TestDaF or DSH test fee reimbursement.
