Study in US: New students start their journey at Brown University
A total of 3,289 students commenced their academic journey at Brown University in the US. It comprises undergraduate, graduate and medical students.
Brown University, the private Ivy League research university, started its Fall academic sessions 2024-25. The university welcomed a total of 3,289 new students, of which 1,725 new students are for the undergraduate courses.
Logan Powell, associate provost for enrollment and dean of undergraduate admission said, “Even with a significant number of measures in place to ensure a diverse, talented applicant pool and enrolled class, we recognized the likelihood that declines in the number of students of colour at Brown and other selective universities were widely anticipated across the country. We’re pleased to welcome an academically excellent class of students and one that remains diverse, although to a lesser degree than previously.”
This admission cycle is first after the US Supreme Court ruling that race should not be considered for admission process. In the new batch, 18% are from the groups historically not much in higher education. More students are now not reporting their race.

“While some applicants focused on experiences related to their identity, others wrote about a range of topics in response to the new essay prompt — everything from the impacts of climate change and global conflict on their lives, to personal experiences and work in their own communities. Ultimately, our goal was to provide applicants ample opportunity to detail their talents, skills, experiences and ideas as they sought a college education that best fits them. We admitted a class that is academically talented and reflective of the wide range of perspectives and experiences essential for a learning and research community,” he said.
“Expanding race-neutral strategies to encourage outstanding and increasingly diverse incoming classes will remain our priority moving forward. When our student body is both exceptionally talented and representative of a broad array of experiences and perspectives, the Brown educational experience is enriched for all students, and we can make an even greater impact through our scholarship,” Powell said.
45% will get grant aid or need-based scholarship, 14% are international students, 14% first-generation college students. The university is planning to implement more race-neutral strategies and previous measures to encourage diverse and outstanding students in class. 1,420 incoming graduate students have enrolled in 37 master’s and executive master’s programs and 45 doctoral programs in Fall 2024. 48% of new graduate students are international students. For the MD class, 144 medical students started their education at Warren Alpert Medical School.
