There Is Link Between Study Abroad And Poverty Alleviation: Research

Study Abroad: A new study with the name - International student mobility and poverty reduction: A cross-national analysis of low- and middle-income countries found that when students from low to middle income countries go to study abroad and return with global careers and new skills to their home country, they help in alleviating poverty from their home country. It doens not happens immediately but over a period of 15 years.

The study appeared in The International Journal of Educational Research and it was conducted and authored by Maia Chankseliani and Joonghyun Kwak. The main objective to conduct the study was that though there are various researches that show the positive effects of student mobility to another country there is hardly any research that shows its effect on the whole society.

Study Abroad Link With Poverty Alleviation: More Details

The authors used the data on global student mobility in 43 low or middle-income countries from 1999–2018. It was found in the study that the impact of the study abroad returnees on poverty levels was reflected in a period of more than 15 years.

The study abroad decision is much more than going to a new country, as the student learns new skills, gets a global perspective and is equipped with skills which can help their home country to grow.

“Returnees can use their connections formed abroad to build bridges between their home countries and global networks of resources, innovation, and knowledge …. These global connections enable the exchange of ideas and resources, promoting cooperation and supporting local economic development. For example, returnees can attract investments or support for poverty alleviation projects in their own communities ….Armed with technical expertise and an entrepreneurial spirit, returnees may introduce new technologies and methods to sectors like health, science, and business,” says the study, as reported by ICEF Monitor.

The study also suggested that short-term exchange and targeted scholarships are important for studying abroad as it is quite expensive for most families to send their children to study abroad and in such cases, scholarships help. The students from non-affluent families also deserve a fair chance of studying abroad, added the study.
