Technological University of the Shannon in Ireland welcomed the latest announcement by the government about the next development phase of the College of The Future in Clonmel.
Study in Ireland: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O’Donovan TD has announced that the next development phase of the College of The Future in Clonmel has been approved. Technological University of the Shannon has welcomed this announcement.
The university said that this development will result in the establishment of a new kind of campus which is the first of its kind in Ireland.
The project is being executed under the alliance between Tipperary County Council, Tipperary ETB, and TUS who bought the Kickham barracks site in the centre of Clonmel.
Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of TUS, said, “Collaboration is in the DNA of TUS, and we share in the Minister’s delight at today’s announcement. This is a clear endorsement of the power of partnership in Further and Higher Education, and indeed is a historic juncture for Clonmel and for Further and Higher Education in Ireland, with Clonmel becoming the first home for a co-located Further and Higher Education campus. We look forward to the next phase in this exciting and pioneering development, which provides the capacity to extend and develop our research and teaching activity. We look forward to continuing our work with our partners, Tipperary ETB, SOLAS and others. I would like to congratulate all involved in today’s development, which will be of great benefit not just in the Clonmel area, but far beyond.”
Jimmy Browne, Vice President, Campus Services and Capital Development at TUS commented, “Today is a landmark day for Clonmel, for TUS and for Higher and Further Education in Ireland. This project brings together a number of unique aspects, with the repurposing of a historic town centre site which was part of the fabric of Clonmel and Tipperary for generations now becoming an exemplar of a completely new approach to Education provision. This innovation will bring new life to this campus for decades to come. The spirit of collaboration and ambition among the project partners breaks down boundaries and multiplies opportunities for learners, businesses and the community.”
TUS Completes QQI CINNTE Review
It became the second technological university to complete the CINNTE review process in 2024 which comprises quality checks conducted by the state agency - Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) to promote integrity, quality and reputation of Ireland's higher education system.
Dr Padraig Walsh, QQI Chief Executive Officer said, “QQI’s Cinnte review cycle plays a crucial role in ensuring and overseeing the quality of higher education in Ireland. We welcome the findings of the review team which highlights commendable achievements by TUS in student engagement and its commitment to Access and Widening Participation pathways. Equally, the report outlines recommendations which will help TUS to further strengthen its education offerings and continue to deliver high-quality outcomes for all its students.”
Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of TUS commented, “I welcome the publication of the Cinnte Review Report, which is the first external institutional review of the university since its designation three years ago. It thus represents an important milestone for TUS and provides a valuable external validation of our approach as well as a reference point in evaluating quality at the university. TUS is founded on a shared vision and shared values, and I am particularly pleased that this is recognised throughout the report. The Review Team recognised the strong motivation of staff to the development and integration of TUS, our deep commitment to our students and our relationships of respect with stakeholders. I would like to thank the Review Team for their expertise and insights, and reiterate my thanks to QQI for the opportunity that CINNTE affords. We aim for the highest of standards, and appreciate the Review Team’s findings.”
