UChicago scholars elected as American Association for Advancement of Science fellows
Profs. Guangbin Dong and Benoît Roux are elected as fellows of the 2023 American Association for the Advancement of Science. They have made breakthroughs in organic synthetic chemistry and biophysics.
A distinguished lifetime honour within the scientific community is bestowed upon two members of the University of Chicago faculty as they have been elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Profs. Guangbin Dong and Benoît Roux have made breakthroughs in organic synthetic chemistry and biophysics.
Guangbin Dong is the Weldon G. Brown Professor of Chemistry. His expertise is in the field of organic synthesis, catalysis, organometallics and organic materials. His lab works to harness transition-metal catalysts and boron chemistry to address challenges in the arena of chemoselectivity and multi-step synthesis. He joined the University of Chicago in 2016.
Guangbin Dong specializes in efficient ways to innovative approaches to activate and functionalize inert chemical bonds; introduce functional groups into organic molecules; strategies to quickly access structurally complex but important biologically active molecules; and efficient ways to synthesize molecules with complex skeletons.
His earlier awards include - a Sloan Research Fellowship, an American Cancer Society Research Scholarship, Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, the American Chemical Society’s Elias J. Corey Award and a National Sciences Foundation CAREER Award, among others.
Benoît Roux is the Amgen Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is a biophysicist who uses theoretical and computational methods to advance the understanding of the structure, dynamics and function of biological systems at the atomic level.
His lab constructs detailed atomic models of the macromolecular system using a computational approach called “molecular dynamics,”.
UChicago First-Year International Applicants requirements
They can apply for the Autumn Quarter into the undergraduate College at UChicago, which includes majors, minors, and programs of study. The application deadline is November 1, the Decision period is mid December and the reply date is May 1, 2024. The early Action (EA) deadline is for applicants who like to apply early and get an admission decision early but Early Action does to constitute a binding commitment to attend if admitted.
The university offers Inlaks Scholarships for Indian Citizens, granted to Indian students to read at top-rated American, UK, and European institutions in a full-time Masters, MPhil, or Doctoral program. It grants an award of up to USD 100,000 and covers program tuition as well as scholars’ living expenses, healthcare, and one-way airfare. To apply the applicant must be an Indian citizen, candidates having a postgraduate qualification (e.g. Master’s or PhD) from an institution abroad are NOT eligible to apply, and those who are already studying or have started their postgraduate education at an institution abroad are also NOT eligible to apply.
