University of Kentucky receives whopping $488.4 million in extramural grants
The university has first time received such a huge amount of extramural grants to support their research in the financial year 2024, which is 1.9% up from the previous year.
Study in US: University of Kentucky has received the biggest amount to date in extramural grants and contracts to back the research in the financial year 2024. The amount it received this year is $488.4 million, up by 1.9% as compared to the previous year when it received $479.3 million in FY23 research awards.
UK President Eli Capilouto said, “Our sustained growth as a research university is directly connected to the intentional focus we have on the biggest issues in our Research Priority Areas — cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, energy, issues of equitable access, materials science, neuroscience and substance use. Without question, research is vital in our mission to serve Kentucky."

This growth is a testament to the talent, collaboration and innovation of the faculty, staff and students who make up our research investigator community in UK. Their tireless work continues to propel the university forward to advance Kentucky and our nation."

Funding from federal sources stood at $264.4 million in FY24, which increased by 4.7% from the previous year when the support was $252.6 million. The biggest increase was seen in National Institutes of Health awards which was $163.1 million in FY24, up by 12.1% as against the fund received in FY23 which was $145.6 million.
Non-profit awards were up by 15% from $26 million in FY23 to $29.9 million in FY24. It was awarded to two researchers in the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
University of Kentucky announces increased compensation for employees
The university has announced an investment to increase the compensation and benefits of employees. The amount invested for this purpose in FY 2024-25 is $30 million. Of these, around $18 million will be invested for a salary increase pool and over $9 million for health insurance expenditure. In the last 12 years, it is the eleventh time when the university has announced an increase in compensation.
Eli Capilouto President said, "We completed a $2.1 billion capital campaign — Kentucky Can — that focused on creating more access for students and investing in the people and infrastructure that make success possible. And we have begun work on the new Michael D. Rankin MD Health Education Building that will enable us to educate and train more health providers and professionals. We also broke ground on the new UK Cancer and Advanced Ambulatory Building, to help centralize more of the lifesaving, critical care that only we provide."
