University of Melbourne gets new facility to upskill film students

The Light-Emitting-Diode (LED) Volume Studio is designed to up-skill film students and offer them real-world experience and help them gain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving global screen sector.
University of Melbourne film students now get access to cutting-edge virtual production technology that’s being used in Hollywood with the opening of a new facility at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music’s Southbank campus.
Light-Emitting-Diode (LED) Volume Studio boasts of high resolution screen of its kind in Australia. The studio is all set to offer the students a real-world experience and help them gain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving sector.
Senior Lecturer and Head of Virtual Production Andrew O'Keefe said, “this significant investment in infrastructure and training, coupled with a strategic industry partnership with NantStudios, will enable the University to equip the next generation of storytellers and technicians with innovative, conceptual and practical skills that will see them light up screens in Australia and around the world.”
“Global investment in virtual production is growing at an extraordinary rate. It is vital that the next generation of Australian creatives embrace the potential that this technology offers. Our significant investment in LED technology, coupled with NantStudios’ expertise, offers our students the ability to not only join the industry but to lead its development,” he added.
As per the university statement, more and more film and TV studios are taking advantage of virtual production worldwide, with the technology used in a growing list of blockbuster movies including Barbie and Dune. Virtual productions combine traditional digital cinematography with large-scale LED screens to create realistic visual effects.
Faculty of Science's leading quantum experts participate in 2024 Science at Melbourne Public Lecture Series
Recently, some of the Faculty of Science's leading quantum experts addressed the event 2024 Science at Melbourne Public Lecture Series.
The event started with an ‘In Conversation’ with Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology and Director of the IBM Quantum Hub at the University of Melbourne Professor Lloyd Hollenberg.
The event was hosted by physicist and science communicator Associate Professor Suzie Sheehy.
