University Of Virginia USA Offers Graduate Assistantships

The University of Virginia USA is offering various Graduate Assistantships opportunities including graduate research assistants (GRAs) and graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). It will offer students a great opportunity to get experience in research, teaching or administration while getting wages.

The Graduate Assistantships offer health insurance subsidies and tuition remission. One may also get a tuition adjustment.

"Graduate Assistantships (“Assistantships”) provide supervised opportunities for graduate students to gain experiences in teaching or research while receiving wages. Graduate students serving in Assistantships are, first and foremost, students, and the goal of any Assistantship must be to aid the student in the successful completion of their degree," reads the official statement.

The Graduate Assistants should receive a letter of appointment annually specifying the terms of appointment including assigned responsibilities, weekly hours, health insurance subsidy, and compensation.

Eligibility Requirements For Graduate Assistantships

The following are the requirements for graduate assistantships:

  • The students must be enrolled in a full-time graduate degree at the University Of Virginia and must be in good academic standing.
  • They should have a master’s degree or 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline in which they are going to assist in teaching.
  • The assistants should regularly participate in in-service training, and undergo periodic and planned evaluations.
  • GAs should get direct supervision from faculty members.

"A graduate assistant must be offered the health insurance subsidy if they earn at least $5,000 in wages over the course of a fiscal year as a graduate assistant. Schools wishing to provide health insurance to graduate assistants who do not meet these qualifications may do so by processing a health insurance subsidy through the Student Information System (SIS) using non-general funds," added the official notification.

More Details

The departments that want to appoint graduate students without the required qualification as GTA should have approval from the school dean before appointment. The student should have a strong undergraduate academic record. The GRA and GRAs get paid wages on a bi-weekly basis. Those who will be holding a full-time assistantship should be entered into the human resource system as part-time-Regular and will have 20 hours of work per week.
