Adam Mickiewicz University: Courses, Admission, Cost

Adam Mickiewicz University, located in the city of Poznan, Greater Poland, is one of the top three universities in the country. The university has a rich cultural history of almost four centuries. Officially opened on the 7th of May 1919, the university plays a vital role in shaping the socio-economic growth and environmental sustainability of the Polish region. Originally known as Wszechnica Piastowska, the university got its name in the late 1920s after the Polish romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz.

The university is an ardent supporter of pro-European ideas and has the vision to support research work and educational programs. The university was formally established by the Polish King marking the 400th anniversary of Lubra?ski Academy which is regarded as its spiritual predecessor. The first Polish department of Sociology at AMU was started under the leadership of sociologist Florian Znaniecki in the year 1920 and was one of the first centers in Europe. The university was shut down by the Nazis during the invasion of Poland in 1939. However, it was the strong determination of the professors and the youth that led to the university being reopened in November 1940, and it has been functional since then.

Adam Mickiewicz University has one of the largest campuses at Morasko, currently running with seven faculties which include Political Science and Journalism, Historical Studies, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geography, Geology and Computer Studies. It offers both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Arts and Science streams. Apart from the campus at Morasko, the university also has other campuses at Kalisz, Slubice, and Gniezno.

While Kalisz has the Faculty of Fine Arts and Pedagogy, Gniezno runs the Institute of European culture. There are two more city campuses located in Poznan called the Central Campus, hosting the faculties of English, modern languages, Law and Administration, Theology, Polish and Classical Philology. The South Western campus runs the Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Educational Studies. Besides creating a strong academic force, the university's focus is to empower the students to carry out research and exercise their social responsibilities.

Research is one of the biggest USPs of Adam Mickiewicz University, and it holds a list of some notable scholars and scientists whose work has directly impacted the country at many levels. Currently, there are 15 faculties, 29 institutes, and 2 inter-university science centers that have contributed extensively for the university to attain the status of a leading National Research center. Some of the most notable alumni of AMU include Hanna Suchocka, the first female Prime Minister of Poland, Marian Rejewski involved in the Enigma machine, Jan Weglarz, a renowned computer scientist. The university was home to some of the most acclaimed poets of the 20th century such as Krzysztof Grabowski, Stanis?aw Bara?czak, Krzysztof Grabowski, Ryszard Krynicki, etc
