UWE History

The history of the University of West of England can be traced back to 1595 when the Bristol Society of Merchant Ventures’ School was founded. In 1894, the school became Merchant Ventures’ Technical College. After a few changes, in 1975, the Frenchay campus finally opened. Finally, in 1992, Bristol Polytechnic gained status, becoming the University of the West of England. After this, a lot of advancements came into being at the university. Finally, in 2022, the University of West of England celebrated 30 years of being a university, after being awarded university status in 1992.
