History of UMass
The University of Massachusetts was established in 1863 at Amherst as Massachusetts Agricultural College, under the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act. It became Massachusetts State College in 1932 and the University of Massachusetts in 1947. The UMass system expanded with the establishment of UMass Medical School in 1962 and UMass Boston in 1964. In 1989, the Saxon Report recommended a five-campus system, leading to the creation of UMass Lowell and UMass Dartmouth in 1991.
