History
Duquesne University was founded in 1878 by a group of Catholic missionaries. The main building of the university was constructed in 1885. In 1911, the name of the university was changed to Duquesne University of the Holy Ghost. Also, the university’s first professional law school was established in 1911. Between 1990 and 2001, the university opened its first new schools: the John G. Rangos Sr. School of Health Sciences, the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences; and the School of Leadership and Professional Advancement. In 2010, the university commenced construction on a new 12-story Des Places Residence Hall and in 2012, the students moved to this residence hall.
