Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai: Courses, Admission, Cost

Established in 1963, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is a private medical institute in Manhattan, New York City. Commissioned by Mount Sinai Hospital in 1963, the Icahn School of Medicine is the academic teaching arm of the Mount Sinai Health System, which manages eight hospital campuses in the New York metropolitan area. It is regarded as one of the top medical schools in the United States. The university began its first class in 1968 and over the years, the university has gained recognition for its laboratories.

Previously, Icahn School of Medicine was known as the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In 2010, it became an independent institution. The name of the university changed in 2012. The university is associated with the Mount Sinai Health System. Moreover, it is known for publishing a journal of Translational and Personalized Medicine on a bi-monthly basis.

The campus of the university comprises of a number of departments, institutes, and centers related to medicinal research theories. Some of the major departments are neuroscience, dermatology, environmental medicine, and public health, pharmacological sciences, and microbiology. These departments are well-maintained and provide ample knowledge.

The curriculum of the university has two divisions, the first two years are based on the studies related to medical sciences, and the later years are based on the study of clinical sciences. In addition, the university began a new program - an early admission program. The students who apply through the early admission program are known as Humanities and Medicine Program (HuMeds) and they are not required to appear for Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

Students are also taken to center visits so they gain practical knowledge of the field. Over eight hospital campuses are located within the premises. The campuses have experienced staff members and professional faculty. The university comprises of about 600 students in MD, and 90 students in Ph.D. level programs. Some of the individual courses are offered in collaboration with organizations like ACCME, LCME, CEPH, and ACGME.

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai believes in quality education, patient care, research, and community service which are also its missions and the majority of students are required to take part in some aspect of community service.
