Sonoma State University: Courses, Admission, Cost

Sonoma State College was founded in 1960 to be a part of the California State College System. Its first batch in 1961 had an enrollment of 250 students. It became a university in 1978. In 1962, it offered its first four-year programme. In 2001, the board of trustees decided to add 48 acres of land in Copeland Creek. The campus occupies 269 acres of land. It is ranked 34th in the list of the most beautiful colleges in the US. The university has six schools that offer programmes in 65 departments. The schools are School of Arts and Humanities, School of Business and Economics, School of Education, School of Science and Technology, School of Extended and International Education and School of Social Sciences.

The university is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. The university offers a unique wine business programme and other courses in viticulture, owing to its proximity to vineyards. Individual programme accreditations are granted by American Chemical Society, National Association of Schools of Music, National League for Nursing, National Association for Schools of Art and Design, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, School of Education programs approved by Commission on Teacher Credentialing and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

The university has 9408 students, 91% of whom are undergraduates. It has 606 faculty members and 899 staff members. The university sponsors a number of cultural activities, including seminars, workshops and lectures. It is a residential campus and 90% of the freshman and 37% of undergraduate students choose to live on the campus. 64% of the students received financial aid of some sort. The university awards approximately 1.1 million in scholarships every year. Around 2,000 students graduate every year. The gender demographics of the university is 63% female and 37%, male. It was recognised by Princeton Review for having “dorms like palaces”. Notable alumni of the college include David V. Brewer, Associate Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, William C. Davis, Civil War Historian, Mike McGuire California State Senator, Nancy Silverton, chef, baker and author, and Steven Zallian, screenwriter, producer and director.
