Delhi University likely to Offer up to 20% Courses Online Through SWAYAM Portal
Delhi University may provide around 20 percent of the total semester courses within a specific programme. The online courses can be accessed through the SWAYAM portal.
The University of Delhi might offer over 20 percent of its courses through the online platform available on the SWAYAM portal. As per reports, a proposal regarding this will be presented to the Academic Council in the meeting scheduled to be held on November 30, 2023.
This proposal aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to reach 50% Gross Enrollment Ratio (GRE) in higher education by 2035 with the help of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered by the SWAYAM platform.
According to the proposal, colleges may consider to provide up to 20% of the total courses offered in a particular programme in a semester in online mode. This would complement the institute's teaching and learning procedures.
As per reports of News18, the proposal is expected to be opposed by a large majority of AC members who feel that employment generation at the university will be at risk amid the push for online learning. Maya John, assistant professor, Jesus Mary college stated that, "Almost 90 per cent of the Academic Council members will oppose this proposal as it is an anti-student and anti-teacher move. Classroom teaching is very important for many students who come from different backgrounds and this will also impact the need for teaching staff who will be substituted by online learning on SWAYAM.β
