- It helps apply a relevant, actionable context to the entire data analysis in the tableau.
- It gets applied before any other filters used in the worksheet
- Context Filter is an independent filter, and all other filters will be applied to the data that is fetched by the context filter
- A context filter is created to improve performance and to create a dependent numerical or top N filter
- To add a context filter, click on Add to Context on the contextual menu of any existing categorical filter.

Steps to Create Context Filter
- Connect a file (here, we will use sample superstore data)
- Drag the sales to row and postal code to the column shelf
- Drag the postal code to filter shelf
- You will get the window shown in the below screenshot
- Choose by field option
- From the drop-down choose the option Top 10 by sales sum (as shown below in the screenshot)
- Drag the category field to the filter shelf, and you will get the window shown in below screenshot
- It will show three categories,
- choose furniture
- It will show three categories,
- Right-click on the category in the filter shelf and select Add to Context
- The final result shows the postal codes of products from the furniture category.
