What are the Features of a Self Cheque?

Here are the main features of a self-cheque:

• Self cheques are payable to the account holder themselves.
• They can only be cashed at the bank of the drawer.
• They are relatively inexpensive to cash, as most banks do not charge a fee for cashing self cheques.
• Self cheques can be used to withdraw money from your bank account, transfer money between two of your bank accounts, or deposit money into your bank account.
• Self-cheques are less secure than other cheques, such as crossed cheques or banker's cheques. This is because anyone can cash a self-cheque as long as they have the cheque and your signature.

How to Write a Self-Cheque?

Here are the steps to write a self-cheque:

Step 1: Write the Date

Write the current date on the "Date" line in the top-right corner of the cheque. The date format is DD/MM/YYYY.

Step 2: Fill in the Payee Line

Write your name on the "Pay" or "Pay to the order of" line. You can write "Self" or your name as mentioned on your bank account.

Step 3: Write the Amount in Figures

In the box provided on the right side of the cheque, write the amount you want to withdraw in numbers.

Step 4: Write the Amount in Words

Write the exact amount you wrote in figures in words below the "Pay" line. 

Step 5: Sign the Cheque

Sign the cheque at the bottom-right corner. Your signature should match the one your bank has on file.

Step 6: Record the Transaction

For future reference, you are advised to keep a transaction record in your chequebook or bank statement.

Step 7: Deposit the Cheque

• Ensure you have sufficient funds to cover the amount you mentioned on the cheque, or else the cheque may bounce. 
• Make sure to endorse the cheque before you deposit it.
• Get a receipt after you deposit the cheque.
• Check with your bank to ensure that self-cheques are accepted, as policies can vary from one bank to another.
• Remember, since anyone can cash a self cheque by copying your signature, they are less secure.
