Study In US: Webster University Joins New Program To Address Student Food Insecurity

Webster University has joined a new program to offer nutrition education, food and innovative programs to reduce food insecurity among students. This program was started by a non-profit hunger relief organization in St. Louis called Operation Food Search.

Initially, the pilot program will distribute food and toiletries to around 200 Webster students per month starting from January 2025. These will be distributed to students who are experiencing food insecurity.

Legal Studies Professor Anne Geraghty-Rathert commented, "Food insecurity is a human rights issue, but most importantly, it is also a student success and retention issue. People cannot attend college and be successful if they are hungry. We are so incredibly grateful to Operation Food Search for recognizing and fulfilling this need for our students and many other university students in our area."

“The program launch comes on the heels of a food insecurity assessment survey by Webster University Adjunct Full Professor Terri F. Reilly that found that more than half of Webster’s students reported skipping meals while attending Webster due to the lack of funds,” said the statement of Webster University.

Over 750 Students Participated In Survey

A survey was conducted in which more than 750 Webster students participated and it found that 56% lacked money to buy food, 49% were running out of food, 27% were using food pantry, 53% were identified as international students and 47% identified as domestic students.
