·       East Texas Normal College was established in Cooper, Texas, in 1889 by William Leonidas Mayo.

·       A fire devastated the Cooper site in 1894, forcing the university to relocate to Commerce, where it is still located.

·       The institution received state funding on March 14th, 1917, when a bill was approved by the state legislature in 1917. Professor Mayo passed away unexpectedly that same day, just before learning that his college would continue. The name was subsequently changed to East Texas State Normal College.

·       The institution was renamed East Texas State Teachers College in 1923.

·       In 1935, graduate studies were added to the curriculum.

·       The university's name was changed to East Texas State College by the state legislature, which realized the institution had grown beyond just teacher education in 1957.

·       In 1962 the university started the first PhD program.

·       In 1965 the name of the university changed to East Texas State University.

·       The name of the university was changed to Texas A&M University-Commerce. When the university became a part of the Texas A&M University System in 1996.
