DMADV or Define, Measure, Analyse, Design, and Verify is a widely used Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodology. This is also widely applicable in the Six Sigma learning and career path

DMADV method

DMADV helps improve product and service quality within the Six Sigma methodology. It is particularly helpful when developing new products. It not only focuses on the company's benefit, but also on to what degree the product can lead to customer satisfaction and whether there are adequate resources for the processes. 

What is DMADV?

DMADV is the acronym for Define, Measure, Analyse, Design, and Verify. It is a structured approach to developing products, new or existing. It is used alongside other common Six Sigma approaches, specifically Kaizen

Also, the DMADV process follows the first three aspects of DMAIC framework, differing only in the areas of ‘Improve’ and ‘Control’ and replacing them with ‘Design’ and ‘Verify’.

How DMADV Works

Here is a breakdown of the steps in the DMADV methodology. 

Define

This is the first phase where you would be defining the objectives and find out the customer requirements. It is vital to understand the needs and wants or the expectations of your target audience. 

The core questions you would want to ask here are

  1. What are the specific goals and objectives of the project?
  2. Who are the primary stakeholders, and what are their expectations?
  3. What are the critical success factors that define project success?

Measure

When there is a defined scope, you have to measure. 

Collecting data and establishing baselines allow you to gain the expected insights into the current state of affairs. 

The point is to figure out the quantitative and qualitative metrics to gauge performance and identify areas ripe for improvement. 

The key questions you would want to ask here are the following. 

  1. What data points are essential for assessing the current state?
  2. How will you collect and analyse the data effectively?
  3. What metrics will be used to measure success and progress?

Analyse

With data in hand, the next step is analysis. You would want to explore the root causes of any existing issues or potential pitfalls. 

You would have to explore what the data you have collected to make meaning. Employ the statistical tools and methodologies to discern patterns and trends.

  2. Are there any recurring patterns or trends in the data?

Design

If the analysis of the root causes is solid, it is easier to transition seamlessly into the design phase. 

This phase is about the innovative solutions and alternatives you can come with. 

Figure out from the insights from the analysis phase to engineer robust, customer-centric designs that address identified challenges head-on. 

Try focusing on answering these questions. 

  • What are the key features and functionalities of the proposed solution?
  • How will the solution address the identified issues and meet customer needs?
  • Are there any potential risks or constraints that need to be considered during the design process?

Verify

The verification phase serves as the litmus test for the efficacy of your designs. 

Rigorous testing and validation protocols ensure that your solutions meet desired standards and exceed customer expectations. 

Make sure you address these questions. 

  • Does the implemented solution meet the defined project objectives and requirements?
  • Have all identified issues and challenges been adequately addressed?
