Introduction

In this article, we will discuss the Gantt chart in the tableau.

What is a Gantt Chart?

  • Used for comparison of data between categories
  • Use for displaying a project schedule
  • It has time-series data that is available in a natural and easy to understand format

Gantt charts are the most popular and useful way of showing activities displayed against the time.

In simple terms, the Gantt chart shows what has to be done (the activities) and when (the schedule).

It takes at least a dimension and a measure in addition to the time dimension.

Each activity is shown by the bar. The position and length of the bar show the beginning time, duration and end date of the activity.

Letโ€™s understand how to create a Gantt Chart with an example.

Steps to Create a Gantt Chart

We want to show the time interval between the order and ship date using Gantt Chart

  • Connect a file (here, we will use Sample Super-Store data)
  • Drag and drop the Order Date into the column shelf

  • Right Click on Order Date, and Select Month from the drop-down

  • There are 48 marks representing months of every year

  • Drag and drop Sub-Category and Ship Mode into the Row Shelf
  • All the sub-categories are listed along with ship mode on the y-axis

Now, we will find the interval between ship date and order date and for that we will create a Calculated Field (to find the interval) from the Analysis in Toolbar menu

  • Select Create Calculated Field from Analysis

A window will appear

  • Write Interval in Calculation Dialogue Box
  • In Formula Dialogue Box:
    • Write DATEDIFF(โ€˜dayโ€™, [Order Date], [Ship Date])
    • DATEDIFF is used to find the difference between two dates (here, order date and ship date)
  • Click OK

  • Drag and drop the Interval from Measures into the Size in the Mark Pane
  • We get the desired Gantt Chart

Adding Details in Gantt Chart

As in our above chart, the aggregation for Interval is SUM (which is default), but we can change them as per our requirements

  • We can change, the measure calculation by right-clicking on the measure name in mark pane
    • Options are Sum, Average, Median, Mode, Count, Minimum, Maximum, Percentile, Standard Deviation etc.

To get the record of particular time period, we can add filters

  • Right-click on Order Date in Column Shelf and select Filter
