Grok AI: Elon Musk's Answer to ChatGPT

Elon Musk, the Owner and CTO of X, the Founder, CEO, and chief engineer of SpaceX and the CEO of Tesla Motors, has unveiled Grok as part of xAI. It is referred to as a direct competition to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Musk unveiled Grok on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), and claimed that the prototype surpasses ChatGPT 3.5 in several benchmarks. This development is part of Musk's latest venture, xAI, aimed at revolutionizing the world of Generative AI.

What is Grok?

Grok is a conversational generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI. It is designed to answer questions with humour and has a rebellious streak. xAI suggests - "so please don’t use it if you hate humor!"

What makes Grok AI different from other chatbots is its ability to provide real-time access to information and its willingness to tackle even the most controversial questions head-on. 

Grok is built upon xAI's proprietary large language model (LLM) called Grok-0. This powerful model boasts 33 billion parameters. Notably, Grok-0 has demonstrated its ability to outperform ChatGPT based on the GPT 3.5 language model (free version).

Grok Availability

Access to Grok will only be available to X Premium+ subscribers in selected 46 countries, including India, Pakistan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, among others, where the premium subscribers of X can use Grok. As of Dec 18, 2023,  Grok is not yet available to the general public in these countries. However, Elon Musk has announced that it will soon be available for all.

Musk has expressed his ambition to transform X beyond its role as a social platform into a comprehensive app similar to Tencent Holding Ltd.'s WeChat in China. In this context, Grok is essential in developing the platform's capabilities.

While xAI operates separately from X, it intends to collaborate closely with X, Tesla, and other Musk-affiliated businesses.

Grok is in its beta phase. It is still under development and only accessible to X Premium+ subscribers on the X platform.

Grok Controversies

Due to its access to Twitter and the tendency for edgy humor, Grok has drawn criticism for potentially generating offensive or harmful content. 

For example, when a user asked Grok to suggest how to cook meth, it suggested the step-by-step process of cooking meth. 

It shows that Grok still needs to work on the ethical part of AI and provide user assistance more responsibly. Musk also emphasizes the importance of user responsibility, ethical development, and open dialogue. He noted they were “taking immediate action to shift Grok closer to politically neutral".
