In this article, we will discuss the Pareto Chart in the tableau.

Tableau is a data visualization tool that allows drawing different charts and graphs using Show me with just simple drag and drop.

Tableau Show Me has 24 different charts.

Each chart in the tableau corresponds to a minimum number of dimensions, measures, bins, etc.

What is a Pareto Chart?

  • Consists of two graphs: Bar and Line graphs
    • Individual values (raw quantities for each dimension) are represented by bars in descending order
    • Ascending cumulative total (in percentage format) is represented by lines
  • Traditionally, it is used for identifying the biggest opportunities for improvement.

Steps to create a Pareto Chart

  • Connect a file (here, we will use Sample Super-Store data)
    • Drag Sub-Category into the column shelf
    • Drag the Sales into the row shelf
    • Right-click on Sub-category
      • Select Field in Sort By
      • Click on Descending in Sort Order

  • Drag Sales into the Row Shelf

  • Right-click on newly added sales -> Dual Axis
    • It will merge the x-axis of both the measure

  • Create a Bar Chart
    • Right-Click on SUM(Sales) 
      • Select Bar from the dropdown
  • Create a Line Chart
    • Right-Click on SUM(Sales) (2)
    • Select Line from the drop-down

  • Add Table Calculation
    • Right-click on the second SUM(Sales) in the Row shelf
      • Select Add Table Calculation
        • Table Calculation window will appear

  • In Table Calculation Window
    • Fill in all the requirements as given in the screenshot
