  5. Assumptions: The Theory of Change also involves identifying assumptions that underpin the strategy. These assumptions need to be validated over time for the ToC to remain credible.
  6. Indicators for Monitoring and Evaluation: ToC requires clear indicators for each outcome along the pathway. These indicators help in monitoring progress and evaluating the effectiveness of the strategies employed.
  7. Participatory Approach: Ideally, the development of a Theory of Change should be a participatory process, involving all key stakeholders. This ensures a more comprehensive understanding of the change process and enhances buy-in from all parties involved.
  8. Flexibility and Adaptation: While ToC provides a structured approach, it also allows for flexibility and adaptation as new information and insights are gained.

Notably, it extends beyond merely determining program effectiveness and clarifying the methods employed for effectiveness. The concept finds its roots in various disciplines like environmental and organisational psychology, sociology, and political science. 

For instance, organisational psychology explores group dynamics, leadership, and motivation within organisations. These are essential to implement change. 

Likewise, sociology provides knowledge about societal structures, relationships, and patterns, offering perspectives on how communities and societies change over time.

How Theory of Change Differs from Programme Logic Models

According to Harvard Family Research Project and the Australian Institute of Family Studies, the differences lie in the way they are explained, the level of detail involved, and more. 

Compared to a programme logic model, a ToC is a comprehensive description of strategies, conditions, actions, and resources involved in bringing about change. It aims to provide a deeper understanding of why certain actions or activities are believed to lead to specific outcomes. It focuses on explaining the reasoning behind the process of change.

Now, a program logic model is a simpler visual representation. It is often described in a linear format, which has the actions and the expected outcomes directly. It does not explain how or why behind these actions. 

Application of the Theory of Change in an Organisational Context

When implemented in an organisation for an initiative or project, it can provide a structured framework that can be used for defining metrics, conducting experiments, and providing a learning culture within teams or organisations. 

What is essential to note is that there are always going to be multiple factors and pathways to contribute to achieving a goal. A theory of change helps in visualising and understanding these complex routes. It simplifies understanding by breaking down the steps required for the desired change

It can also help in resource allocation. Think of finances, human resources, and materials which need to be directed towards activities and interventions that are expected to contribute most to the outcomes that are expected to occur.
This communication helps in demonstrating accountability to stakeholders and showcases the effectiveness of the organisation's interventions.

When Developing Theory of Change Model is Useful

A ToC framework is beneficial when the programme starts and even during it. It is refined basis to the data that is measured during the monitoring and evaluation processes.
