- It is cumulative of measures over dimensions
- Helps to visualize the running sum or total of any measure against the dimension.
- The Waterfall Chart is a kind of Gantt Chart
- It represents the gradual transition of field values from start to end value by representing a running total with successive increments and decrements.

Letโs understand how to create a Waterfall Chart in Tableau with an example
Steps to Create a Waterfall Chart
We want to show sub-category wise sales using Waterfall Chart.
- Connect a file (here, we will use Sample Super Store data)
- Drag the Sub-category into the column shelf
- Drag the Sales into the row shelf
- It will represent, flat marks as data points
- Set a quick table calculation for the measure
- Right-Click on Sum(Sales) -> Quick Table Calculation -> Running Tool
- Create New Calculated Field in Tableau Waterfall Chart
- Right-Click on Measured Field -> Create -> Calculated Field
- Edit Box will appear
- Enter negative sale value( -[Sales]
- Rename the field as Waterfall
- Click Apply -> OK
- Drag Sales into the color in the marks pane
- Drag Waterfall into the size in the marks pane
- We get the desired waterfall chart
