WWW Full Form in Computer Science

The full form of WWW computer is World Wide Web.

It is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessible through the internet. It allows users to navigate and access information through web pages containing text, images, videos, etc.

WWW was first coined by the British Computer Scientist Sir Tim Berners Lee while working with the CERN in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He proposed a global hypertext system to facilitate the sharing and retrieval of scientific information among researchers.

Lee invented three fundamental technologies that form the basis of the World Wide Web:

  • HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is a markup language used to structure the content of web pages. HTML uses tags to define headings, paragraphs, links, images, etc.
  • HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol): This protocol allows the transfer of hypertext documents on the web. It enables communication between web servers and web browsers, facilitating the retrieval and display of web pages.
  • URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) are addresses used to identify resources on the web. They specify the protocol (such as HTTP or HTTPS), the domain name, and the path to the specific resource.

Note:

  • WWW is commonly referred to as the web.
  • Some of the common web browsers are:
    • Google Chrome
    • Mozilla Firefox
    • Opera
    • Safari
    • Microsoft Edge

WWW: Then and Now

Year Milestone Description
1989 Inception Tim Berners-Lee at CERN conceived WWW to share the data and research findings among scientists.
1990 First Web Browser and Servers Berners-Lee developed the web browser and web server. The WorldWideWeb browser (later renamed to Nexus) was a web editor and a browser.
1991 Public Access It was opened to the public on August 6, 1991.
1993 Mosaic Web Browser Mosaic was released, which allows users to view text and images together on one page for the first time.
1994 Commercialization and Expansion It was used for a commercial advertisement for the first time, leading to an explosion of websites.
1995-2000 Dot-com Boom A rapid web business expansion in this period led to the dot-com boom. Many internet companies like naukri.com and shisksha.com were launched.
2000s Web 2.0 Web 2.0 was coined to describe the trend of the web. The website started to include features like user-generated content, social networking, and interactive services.
2010s Mobile Web With the rise of smartphones, the web has become increasingly accessed through mobile devices. The website had to adapt to this change, leading to the rise of responsive web design.
Present Web 3.0 and Beyond Web 3.0 or Semantic Web, where content is placed so that machines can access, understand, and process it. Technologies like Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Blockchain can do this.

Do not confuse WWW with the Internet

The Internet is a massive network of networks. In simple terms, it is the infrastructure that connects millions of computers globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with another computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet. It enables the transfer of various data and services, including emails, file transfers, remote login, and voice and video calls.

On the other hand, the World Wide Web is simply a service that operates over the Internet. It is a collection of interconnected documents and other resources linked by hyperlinks and URLs. The data is transmitted using the HTTP protocol.

The key difference between the Internet and WWW is that the Internet is a physical network of networks that connect computers worldwide. At the same time, WWW is a virtual network of information we access via web browsers.

Conclusion

In this article, we have briefly discussed www ka full form, how it evolved over time, and how it differs from the Internet. I hope you will like the article.
