Candidates looking to convert CGPA to percentage are required to multiply their overall CGPA by 9.5 to get an overall percentage. Read this article to learn the CGPA to percentage formula to get your result in the desired format by doing some simple calculations.

A CGPA is a comprehensive measure of a student's overall academic performance throughout their academic year or course. A good CGPA opens doors to several good colleges with similar admission requirements. Students with good CGPA can choose the right college from a range of available colleges based on their preferences, CGPA, available courses and other requirements.

CGPA is a standard grading system used by educational institutions to evaluate a student's overall academic performance. It's typically calculated on a scale of 10 grade points, where 10 is the highest achievable grade. Percentage, on the other hand, is a more traditional method of grading, with 100% being the perfect score. In this article, you will learn how to convert CGPA into percentage by simply applying the CGPA to percentage conversion formula.

What is the difference between CGPA and Percentage?

A CGPA is a representation of a student's academic performance using grade points on a scale of 10 or 4. However, a percentage is a calculation of the student's obtained marks out of a total of 100 marks. Both the CGPA and percenatge are a way of representation of a student's performance. However, they differ in the way they are calculated and interpreted. Check out the key differences between CGPA and percentage below.

Differences Between CGPA and Percentage
CGPA Percentage
A CGPA is calculated based on the grade points assigned to each course by averaging out all the grade points obtained in all the semesters (as per the total credit hours or weightage for each course).

The percentage is simply calculated by multiplying the fraction of the marks obtained in a subject/course to the total possible marks for the same by 100.

One can also calculate the percentage obtained across a semester by averaging out the marks obtained in different subjects as per the above method.

As the calculation of CGPA involves both - the obtained grade points and the number of credits (or credit hours) for each subject/course in a semester, it gives an indication of the holistic view of the academic performance of the student across various subjects and semester.  A percentage is a reflection of the marks obtained in a subject or semester. A higher percentage usually means good performance.

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

Note that this formula is commonly used by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India for grades IX and X. However, most higher education institutes suggest multiplying "10" with your CGPA to get the actual percentage obtained across all your semester exams. Check the same with your faculty or counsellors before getting an idea of your overall percentage from CGPA.

How to Convert a 10-Point CGPA into Percentage?

There are two CGPA grading scales, one on a 10-point scale and another one on a 4-point grading scale. The steps to convert a 10-point CGPA into percentage are given below.

  1. The most commonly used CGPA to percentage conversion formula is: Percentage = (CGPA × 9.5)
  2. This simple formula works because:
    • 10 CGPA is typically equated to 95% or higher
    • The factor 9.5 helps spread the CGPA across a percentage range
  3. Step-by-step process of CGPA to percentage conversion:
    • Take your CGPA (on the 10-point scale)
    • Multiply it by 9.5
    • The result is your percentage
  4. Example calculations:
    • If CGPA is 9.0, Percentage = 9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5%
    • If CGPA is 8.5, Percentage = 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%
    • If CGPA is 7.5, Percentage = 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25%

How to Convert a 4-Point CGPA into Percentage?

Follow the below-given steps to convert a 4-point CGPA (GPA) to percentage:

  1. To convert the CGPA to percentage on a 4-point scale, you can use this formula: Percentage = (CGPA÷ 4) × 100
  2. Here's a step-by-step process:
    • Take your CGPA value
    • Divide it by 4 (the maximum possible CGPA)
    • Multiply the result by 100 to get the percentage
  3. Example calculations:
    • If your CGPA is 3.5, Percentage = (3.5 ÷ 4) × 100 = 0.875 × 100 = 87.5%
    • If your CGPA is 3.0, Percentage = (3.0 ÷ 4) × 100 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%

Note: Always check with your specific institution for their exact conversion method, as it can vary.

A 9 CGPA is generally considered excellent. This is because a 9 CGPA typically translates to an "A" grade, indicating a strong understanding of the subject matter and consistent hard work. Many scholarships and university admissions processes consider a 9 CGPA as an excellent academic achievement and it may increase your chances of being selected.

Q:   What is CGPA to Percentage conversion certificate?

A:

A CGPA to Percentage conversion certificate is an official document issued by a university or college that converts a student's Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) into an equivalent percentage score. This is important for Indian students applying to study abroad as many universities and colleges require applicants to submit their academic records in percentage format.

The conversion formula used may vary between universities and institutions, so it's important to obtain the official certificate from your university or college to ensure accuracy.

Q:   What is the relationship between Percentage and CGPA?

A:

The relationship between CGPA and percentage is determined by the conversion factor 9.5. To convert percentage to CGPA, divide the percentage by 9.5. Conversely, to convert CGPA into percentage, multiply the CGPA by 9.5.

Q:   How are individual semester percentages used to calculate overall CGPA?

A:

If your university provide your semester results in the form of percentages, then, you need to convert the percentage of your semester results into grades to send them to your desired university abroad because universities abroad require the results of your college degree in the form of a GPA or CGPA.

Below are the steps to convert your semester percentages to a CGPA.

  1. Calculate the Grade Points for Each Semester: Each semester's percentage can be converted into a grade point using the university's accepted grading scale. For example, many universities may translate 90% and above marks to a 4.0 grade point on a 4.0 grading scale (commonly accepted by the universities abroad).
  2. Calculating Weighted Grade Points: Each course has its own importance, based on which its weightage is decided upon by the university. University does it by assigning some credit points to each course. For the calculation of weighted grades for a semester, the grade points obtained in that semester are multiplied with the credit points.
  3. Calculation of SGPA: For the calculation of SGPA for a given semester, all the weighted grade points of the subjects taught in that given semester are averaged out. This is done by adding all (grade point * credit value) of all courses in the semester and dividing the sum by the total credit points involved.
  4. Calculation of CGPA: Now the CGPA is the weighted average of all the SGPAs earned across all semesters of a degree program. Hence, CGPA is calculated by dividing the total SGPAs by the total credits across all semesters.

Let us understand this by the following example:-

Let's say a student has the following outcome of his two semesters' results:

  • Semester 1: 90% (equivalent to 4.0 GPA), 15 credits

  • Semester 2: 85% (equivalent to 3.5 GPA), 18 credits

  • Semester 1 Weighted Grade Points: 4.0 * 15 = 60

  • Semester 2 Weighted Grade Points: 3.5 * 18 = 63

  • Total Weighted Grade Points: 60 + 63 = 123

  • Total Credits: 15 + 18 = 33

  • CGPA: 123 / 33 = 3.73 (approximately)

Q:   How can I convert my CGPA to percentage for each semester?

A:

To convert CGPA to percentage, multiply your CGPA by 9.5. For example, if your CGPA at the end of a semester is 8.9474, your percentage would be 85%. This formula helps you understand your performance in terms of the traditional percentage scale.

For example, to convert a 7.6 CGPA into percentage, you must multiply the same by 9.5 as given below.

Percentage: CGPA * 9.5 = 7.6 * 9.5 = 72.2 %

However, it must be noted that some universities also recommend multiplying the CGPA with 10.0 to get the percentage. Check out which of the above two does your university accept (either 9.5 or 10) before converting your CGPA to percentage to get a better understanding.

Q:   How does the CGPA to percentage conversion differ between 10-point and 4-point scales?
