5-Steps of Essay Writing in Task 2
To understand how to go about IELTS Writing Task 2, we have created a 5-step plan, check them out below:
Step 1 - Planning
The first part of planning your IELTS Writing Task 2 includes "Reading the Topic Carefully" not only once, but it is crucial to read the question thoroughly enough to differentiate between what is given and what is asked.
After reading the question comes the role of "Identifying the types of Questions."
Different Types of Essays
Essay Type 1: Statement with follow-up questions.
The first statement of the topic is something that is "given" to us for a reference of "what is happening." While explaining the topic, it is essential not to emphasise what is given but to delve into the details of what is asked in the topic—what are the causes and solutions?
Example: In some countries, schools face severe problems regarding students' behaviour. What are the causes of it? What solutions can you suggest?
Essay Type 2: Argument (agree/disagree)
In this type of question, the examiner expects the candidate to decide whether they agree, disagree or partially agree to a topic. Choosing the view you are comfortable writing about is essential, not just to form an impression.
There could be the following types of argument questions:
- Do you agree or disagree?
- To what extent do you agree or disagree?
- How far do you agree or disagree?
- Do you agree?
- To what extent do you agree?
- How far do you agree?
For the first argument type of question, candidates can either choose to write about "agree" or "disagree"." In contrast, for the others, candidates can either choose to agree, disagree or partially agree in their response.
Example: Students at schools and universities learn far more from lessons with teachers than from other sources (such as the internet, television). To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Essay Type 3: Advantages/Disadvantages
The question type could either be advantages or/ and disadvantages; the differentiation is quite clear.
If the question consists of "or," candidates should take a side; in the case of "and," they need to explain both sides of the topic.
Example: Some companies and organisations require their employees to wear uniform. What are the advantages and disadvantages of wearing uniform?
The question could also be asked in terms of "outweigh".
- Do you think the advantages of (something) outweigh the disadvantages?
- Do you think the disadvantages of (something) outweigh the advantages?
In either question, the candidate must explain both sides, emphasising one side more.
Example: Some companies and organizations require their employees to wear uniform. Do you think the advantages of wearing uniform outweigh the disadvantages?
Essay Type 4: Discussion Based
In this question type, candidates are asked to discuss either one view or both of the given views.
The question is structured in the following ways:
Example: Some people think that children should learn how to compete, but others think that children should be taught to cooperate to become more useful adults. Express some reasons for both views and give your own opinions.
OR
Example: Some people believe that students should be taught to work in teams to become useful adults. Discuss and give your opinion.
Essay Type 5: Justify
This type of question needs to be answered in Yes/No and explained on whichever side you have chosen.
Example: When families have a meal together it is considered social activity. Do you think eating together is important to people in your country? Justify
Next Steps
After reading and identifying the question type, next comes the content preparation by "Making Notes".
It is always necessary to have a rough draft by brainstorming Ideas and Writing down your thoughts related to the topic to avoid getting stuck while writing. Instead of thinking and writing simultaneously, preparing some notes is a better approach. Take a few minutes to plan your essay. Adding this step can save you time and help you write a more organised response.
Step 2 - Organising
In the second step of Writing Task 2, you need to learn to organise the ideas. Decide how to present your ideas and outline your essay structure briefly.
Step 3 - Writing
A well-structured essay is crucial for a high score. You are required to form 4-5 paragraphs in the Writing Task 2. The ideal word limit of a Writing Essay is not exactly 250 words but targets a word limit between 260 and 280 words.
Introduction:
The first paragraph should be formed for the "Introduction". It consists of the paraphrasing of the question. The first paragraph initially consists of paraphrasing the question, followed by a thesis statement highlighting the essay's main point. Lastly, it is essential to highlight your choice of view.
- Start with a hook to grab the reader's attention.
- Paraphrase the essay question.
- Thesis statement: Clearly state your main argument or position on the question.
Body Paragraphs:
The introduction is followed by a "body paragraph". The second and third paragraphs are formed for the BODY, which consists of the "Essay Topic" content followed by an explanation and an example.
Each body paragraph should focus on one main idea. Use linking words to ensure coherence and cohesion. The first and last paragraphs remain fixed in all question types, but a candidate can write two or three body paragraphs in specific questions (outweigh/partially agree).
- Each paragraph focuses on one main idea related to the thesis.
- Topic sentence introduces the main idea of the paragraph.
- Explanation: Elaborate on the main idea, providing evidence to support your claims.
- Example: Use a specific example to illustrate your point.
- Use linking words (e.g., however, furthermore) to ensure smooth transitions between ideas.
Conclusion:
The last paragraph is formed for the "Conclusion", summarising the main points and restating your position or suggesting a solution.
- Briefly summarize the main points of your essay.
- Restate your position on the question.
- Optional: Offer a concluding thought or suggestion.
Note:
- The first and last paragraphs (Introduction and Conclusion) are always added.
- The number of body paragraphs can vary depending on the question and your chosen approach (2-3 paragraphs for "outweigh" or "partially agree" questions).
Steps 4 and 5 - Editing and Revising
These two steps involve correcting grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors. They also include improving sentence structure and word choice. Lastly, they involve examining the essay as a whole and making last-minute changes if required.
