  • Explore in detail how selected composers created works based on their engagement with and involvement in the visual arts, especially painting; how their oeuvres are intricately linked to contemporary aesthetic theories, and the ways in which they required and generated new forms of performance, listening and types of graphic notation
  • The central aim is to develop an understanding of choice works, movements and -isms by focusing on the musical works themselves, the ways in which they were composed, and how they can be situated in twentieth century culture
  • The course aims to expand the participant's knowledge, engage in discussion, and spur on to discover new aspects of modernism (and beyond) in music and the visual arts in the long twentieth century

Dr Joris de Henau
Joris de Henau, PhD (Dunelm), MPhil (Sorbonne), MA (KULeuven) is a musicologist and musician. He lectures in music at OUDCE, has tutored at Oriel College and taught at the Universities of Durham and Newcastle. His research interests include keyboard music, aesthetics, and global music history.
