- Understand why we need the discipline of systems engineering in order to address the complexity of modern systems
- Construct a design structure matrix (DSM), either by analyzing the system design or by transforming a graph of the system
- Build a process DSM and identify how it differs from a design DSM
- From a DSM, apply a sequencing algorithm that reorganizes the system components into modules, or that groups the different tasks and processes of the system
