Course details

Who should do this course?
  • Those with a strong foundation in calculus and linear algebra will find the mathematical tools needed for comprehending the theoretical framework of quantum mechanics
What are the course deliverables?
  • Develop a profound understanding of the foundational principles of quantum mechanics, including wave-particle duality, superposition, and quantum entanglement
  • Acquire advanced mathematical skills essential for solving complex problems in quantum mechanics, including linear algebra, differential equations, and complex analysis
  • Gain expertise in describing and manipulating quantum states using mathematical formalisms, and comprehend the role of operators in quantum systems
  • Learn to solve and interpret the Schrödinger equation, understanding its applications in predicting the behavior of quantum systems
More about this course
  • This course follows MIT?s on campus 8.05, the second semester of the three-course sequence on undergraduate quantum mechanics, and will be equally rigorous. 8.05 is a signature course in MIT's physics program and a keystone in the education of physics majors
  • You must have seen the Schrödinger equation and studied its solutions for the square well potential, the harmonic oscillator, and the hydrogen atom
  • You may have learned this by self-study or by taking an introductory one-quarter or one-semester course on the subject
  • The last part of the module gives an in-depth look into linear algebra to establish the mathematical foundation necessary to do quantum mechanics

Barton Zwiebach
Barton Zwiebach is a Professor of Physics at MIT. His specialty is String Theory and Theoretical Particle Physics. His central contributions have been in the area of String Field Theory, where he did the early work on the construction of open string field theory and then developed the field theory of closed strings. Zwiebach has also made important contributions to the subject of D-branes with exceptional symmetry, the subject of tachyon condensation, and T-duality. Professor Zwiebach is a distinguished educator and is well known for his contributions to undergraduate education. He created a “String Theory for Undergraduates” course at MIT, and based on the lectures from this course wrote an undergraduate textbook, A First Course in String Theory, published by Cambridge University Press.String Theory, published by Cambridge University Press.
