Who should do this course?
  • For individuals who are interested in lifelong learning and personal enrichment
What are the course deliverables?
  • Describe the structure and function of the vertebrate nervous system and its application to the neurobiology of behavior
  • Understand the structures and functions of neurochemicals that are generated by and modulate the nervous system
  • Examine the various roles played by the nervous and endocrine systems in controlling physiological processes and behavior, with a focus on sexual and parental behaviors, aggression, and ingestion
  • Understand the form, function, and pathology of the adult nervous system in terms of antecedent development processes
  • Critically evaluate research strategies and hypotheses in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neuropharmacology to understand psychiatric disorders from a biological perspective
More about this course
  • The online Certificate in Neuroscience allows you to explore biological, psychological, and clinical approaches to understanding the nervous system as the biological basis of behavior
  • This program covers topics in neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, and pharmacology to gain deeper insight into behavior, focusing on areas including perception, social behavior, mental health, and the effect of drugs on the function of the central nervous system

Faculty details

Lori Flanagan-Cato, PhD
Dr. Flanagan-Cato has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania for over 20 years, studying the neural circuits and receptor signaling mechanisms that underlie hormone-driven behaviors, such as water and sodium ingestion and reproductive behaviors. She is importantly involved in a number of outreach programs, bringing neuroscience to the broader Philadelphia community. She teaches Hormones, Brain, and Behavior.
Jennifer Heerding, PhD
Dr. Heerding has been associated with Penn for over 20 years as a graduate student, a postdoctoral fellow, and now as the Associate Director for the Biological Basis of Behavior (BBB) Program. She is a native of California with degrees in chemistry from both U.C. Davis and U.C. Berkeley. Dr. Heerding earned her PhD in Pharmacology at Penn in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Fluharty, investigating ligand binding to G protein-coupled receptors. She teaches Autonomic Pharmacology, using her Rhodesian Ridgeback, Zoey, as a topic of numerous hypothetical medical conditions and situations.
