An extension of French-Indian ties and to promote education between the two countries, the French government launched the Charpak Scholarships – a grant initiative that is managed by the Embassy of France in India. The Charpak Scholarship is named after Nobel Laureate and French Physicist, Georges Charpak who was the recipient of the coveted Nobel Prize in Physics in 1992. The Charpak Scholarships is the apex body that offers three categories of funding for Bachelor's and Master's level, the Charpak Lab Scholarship (now called the Charpak Summer Training Scholarship), the Charpak Exchange Scholarship and the Charpak Master's Scholarship. - The months allowed to do a research or internship are extended from May to July to May to August.
Charpak Summer Training Scholarship – Eligibility
Candidates looking to apply for the Charpak Lab Scholarship can check out the eligibility for Charpak Lab Scholarships, below. Applicants should note that they are required to fulfil the scholarship eligibility criteria to apply for the same.
- The candidate applying for the Charpak Lab scholarship must be of Indian nationality residing in India at the time of application
- The candidate should not be more than 30 years of age at the time of application
- The candidates should be enrolled in an Indian university/institution of higher learning at either bachelor's or master's level during the time of application
- The candidate applying for the Charpak Lab Scholarship must be in possession of an admission/acceptance letter from a French laboratory or institution where the research internship/project will be carried out. Note that the students willing to do their internship or research project at a university in France must contact the university or institution on their own before the beginning of the program.
- The internship/project's duration should not be less than one month and should not exceed two months in duration. In case the project exceeds the permissible time frame, the awardee will have to cover the expenses for the remainder of the stay.
Charpak Summer Training Scholarship Selection Process
The Charpak Summer Training Scholarship selection process is based on the academic excellence and quality of the candidate’s statement of purpose. The candidates’ CGPA/Percentage does not affect the selection procedure for the Charpak Summer Training Scholarship. Candidates with knowledge of the French language would be an asset, however, knowing French is not a mandatory requirement.
Charpak Summer Training Scholarship Application Process
The application to the Charpak Summer Training Scholarship is entirely online. Candidates wanting to submit their applications are required to visit http://ifi.scholarship.ifindia.in/. Along with the application, they would be required to submit a number of scanned documents as mentioned below.
- Recent photograph (JPG)
- A scanned copy of your passport (the first page that has your photo and expiry date). If the student is to receive their passport post the scholarship application deadline, they must submit a copy of their passport application.
- Full Curriculum Vitae – do not exceed 2 pages
- NOC from your Indian institution in the format given below.

Apart from getting an opportunity to undertake research study in a foreign country, the benefits of securing the Charpak Summer Training Scholarship would include the following:
- A monthly stipend of €700 euros for a maximum period of two months between May and August. This would be provided by the Embassy of France in India.
