Hi, With 77% in Diploma, you are eligible to pursue architecture course if you have qualified in NATA 2019 exams (second round NATA exams is on 7th July) or JEE mains paper 2 exams.

He can do some certification course in the duration till he clears his backlog. It is not worth to drop the course for anything else. So do 1-year Diploma or certification course in the field he is interested in.
